Airway-focused orthodontic care at Valley Orthodontics

Airway Orthodontics

A whole-person approach to healthier smiles, breathing, and development.

More Than Straight Teeth

Airway-focused orthodontics is an area of specialty for Dr. Rocha. This whole-person approach considers how the teeth, jaws, facial growth, and breathing patterns work together. By looking beyond alignment alone, we can create an individualized treatment plan designed to support a balanced smile, healthy function, and long-term well-being.

Every patient is different. An airway evaluation helps us understand whether orthodontic concerns such as crowding or a narrow dental arch may be connected with breathing or developmental factors. When appropriate, we also collaborate with other healthcare providers as part of comprehensive care.

Understanding Airway-Focused Care

Airway orthodontics begins with careful evaluation. These common questions explain what we consider and how treatment may fit into a broader care plan.

Airway orthodontics considers the relationship between orthodontic development and breathing. In addition to evaluating the teeth and bite, Dr. Rocha looks at the dental arches, jaw growth, facial balance, and breathing patterns to understand the full picture before recommending treatment.

Possible signs include frequent mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, a narrow palate, crowded teeth, or concerns about jaw and facial development. These signs do not confirm an airway condition, but they may be worth discussing during an orthodontic assessment.

Depending on a patient’s age and needs, orthodontic treatment may guide jaw development, create appropriate space for the teeth, or broaden a narrow dental arch. The goal is a personalized plan that supports healthy oral function while creating a balanced, confident smile.

Children, teens, and adults may benefit from an airway-focused evaluation. Early assessment can be especially useful while a child’s jaws and face are still developing, but it is never too late to discuss breathing, sleep, bite, or alignment concerns with Dr. Rocha.

No. Orthodontic care does not diagnose or treat medical sleep or breathing disorders. When needed, Dr. Rocha may coordinate with a patient’s dentist, pediatrician, ENT, sleep physician, or myofunctional therapist so each concern is evaluated by the appropriate provider.

Dr. Rocha reviews your health history and concerns, examines the teeth, bite, jaws, and facial proportions, and discusses breathing and sleep patterns. Photos, digital scans, or 3D imaging may be recommended when clinically appropriate to help build a complete and individualized treatment plan.
